River Surveying
Survey Operations are one of the UK’s largest data providers for river modelling and flood relief mapping studies, with individual projects ranging from a few hundred metres to over 80 kilometres. We are Environment Agency approved with over 25 years of experience working in and around waterways.
In addition to standard river profiles, we are continually developing specialisations to resolve our client’s surveying needs. Therefore, having previously refined methodologies for laser scanning river structures, fast flowing and culverted sections of watercourses, our most recent development involves using unmanned radio-controlled vessels. Therefore, this is to safely survey sections in dangerous river locations such as fast-flowing locations and weirs.

River Cross Section Surveys
Survey Operations have been involved in watercourse surveying for over 25 years. However, initially for the National Rivers Authority and then for the Environment Agency. Therefore, by utilising traditional surveying methods of total-station and GPS equipment through laser scanning and unmanned boats to collect data for cross-section analysis.
River Modelling
Survey Operations have been involved in watercourse surveying for over 25 years, initially for the National Rivers Authority and then for the Environment Agency. Due to this, utilising traditional surveying methods of total-station and GPS equipment through laser scanning and unmanned boats to collect data for cross-section analysis.
Threshold Surveyors
Property threshold surveying forms part of the flood protection requirements of the Environment Agency. Due to this, our dedicated survey teams are familiar with accessing buildings and measuring individual property locations. Therefore, this is where all doorways and openings are present so that our clients can calculate protection and damage limitations during flood periods.
Emergency Flood Data Recording
Survey Operations have dedicated surveying resources and vast experience providing post-flood and storm survey results.
However, as flooding happens quickly, our surveying teams can respond to emergency call-outs at less than 24 hours notice. Therefore, our dedicated staff members are trained to liaise with the public during those difficult and distressing times.
River Surveys FAQ
Supporting Services for River Survey Projects
River surveys are often required for flood risk management, hydraulic modelling, channel analysis, environmental assessment and infrastructure projects. Depending on the project requirements, river survey work may be supported by additional specialist services to provide a more complete understanding of watercourse conditions, levels, profiles and surrounding features.
For projects that require accurate channel data, our river cross section surveys can provide detailed information to support flood modelling, design and watercourse assessment. Where survey data is needed for modelling and analysis, our river modelling surveys can help provide the information required for hydraulic studies and flood risk projects.
For flood protection schemes, our threshold surveys can support the accurate recording of property and site levels. Where rapid data capture is required after storm or flood events, our emergency flood data recording services can help provide timely survey information for assessment and reporting.
River survey projects may also be supported by our inland river surveys, particularly where water depth, bed levels or submerged features need to be captured as part of a wider survey requirement.
