River Surveying

Survey Operations are one of the UK’s largest data providers for river modelling and flood relief mapping studies, with individual projects ranging from a few hundred metres to over 80 kilometres. We are Environment Agency approved with over 25 years of experience working in and around waterways.

In addition to standard river profiles, we are continually developing specialisations to resolve our client’s surveying needs. Therefore, having previously refined methodologies for laser scanning river structures, fast flowing and culverted sections of watercourses, our most recent development involves using unmanned radio-controlled vessels. Therefore, this is to safely survey sections in dangerous river locations such as fast-flowing locations and weirs.

Cross section surveys

River Cross Section Surveys

Survey Operations have been involved in watercourse surveying for over 25 years. However, initially for the National Rivers Authority and then for the Environment Agency. Therefore, by utilising traditional surveying methods of total-station and GPS equipment through laser scanning and unmanned boats to collect data for cross-section analysis.

Threshold surveys

Threshold Surveyors

Property threshold surveying forms part of the flood protection requirements of the Environment Agency. Due to this, our dedicated survey teams are familiar with accessing buildings and measuring individual property locations. Therefore, this is where all doorways and openings are present so that our clients can calculate protection and damage limitations during flood periods.

Emergency Flood Data Recording

Survey Operations have dedicated surveying resources and vast experience providing post-flood and storm survey results.

However, as flooding happens quickly, our surveying teams can respond to emergency call-outs at less than 24 hours notice. Therefore, our dedicated staff members are trained to liaise with the public during those difficult and distressing times.

River Surveys FAQ

The purpose of a river survey is to collect detailed data about river channels, banks, and surrounding environments. This information is essential for flood risk assessments, environmental monitoring, river restoration, and infrastructure planning.

A river survey typically collects data on water depth, flow velocity, channel width, sediment composition, bank stability, and vegetation. It may also include topographical information of surrounding areas.

River surveys often use specialised equipment such as total stations, GPS, echo sounders, acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs), and UAVs for aerial imagery and mapping. In some cases, drones equipped with LiDAR are also used.

River surveys provide critical data on channel capacity, flow behaviour, and floodplain characteristics. This information helps in predicting flood risks, designing mitigation measures, and protecting communities and infrastructure.

A bathymetric survey focuses on mapping the underwater features of a riverbed using sonar or other depth-measuring technologies. It provides detailed data on riverbed contours, sediment levels, and submerged obstacles.
