Underground Utility Surveying

Survey Operations Utility Department was established in 2002 to offer a wide range of services to locate and record underground services.

We use EML (Electro Magnetic Location) and GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) equipment to scan site areas to identify underground services.

In addition to the above methods, Radiosonde equipment is used to survey drainage and ductwork for alignment and connectivity and CCTV camera surveys and water jetting are provided as an additional service to supplement the survey results.

All our utility surveys are carried out in accordance the latest approved PAS 128:2014 specification for underground utility detection, verification and location standard, as published by the BSI in 2014.

The survey results are provided in drawing and cad formats to recognised industry standards.

Industries Using Utility Surveying

Underground Utility Surveying is utilised across various industries that require precise information about the location and type of subsurface utilities before commencing construction or development projects. Examples of industries are infrastructure development, property and commercial development, utilities management, environmental and geotechnical engineering, public works, urban planning, and telecommunications.

These industries rely on accurate mapping of underground utilities to avoid interference with existing services during construction and to ensure public safety. Techniques are used to detect both metallic and non-metallic subsurface objects, aiding in reducing planning time, minimising risk, and complying with health and safety regulations.

Utility Surveys FAQs

A Utility Survey involves detecting, verifying, and mapping underground utilities such as water mains, gas pipelines, electrical cables, and telecommunications lines. This process provides essential information to prevent accidental damage during construction and ensures safety and compliance with regulations.

Utility Surveys are crucial for:

  • Safety: Preventing accidents by identifying the location of underground utilities before excavation.
  • Cost Efficiency: Avoiding costly repairs and project delays caused by damaging existing utilities.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring adherence to legal standards and guidelines, such as PAS 128:2014.

Survey Operations employs advanced equipment, including:

  • Electro Magnetic Location (EML): Detects metallic utilities by identifying electromagnetic fields.
  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR): Locates both metallic and non-metallic utilities by sending radar pulses into the ground.
  • Radiosonde Equipment: Surveys drainage and ductwork for alignment and connectivity.
  • CCTV Camera Surveys: Provides visual inspection of underground drainage systems.
