Culvert Surveys

Surveying within culverts and deep tunnels are fast becoming a lost art and accordingly, our specialist confined spaces teams have never been busier. Water industry contracts mainly involve the precise traversing, detailing and alignment of deep sewers, culverts, branches and connections.

Typically working in tunnels of 1.2m diameter and above, these surveys require specialist surveyors applying tried and tested methods in an often hostile environment. Commonly undertaken to enable the design of an above-ground piling layout, we recently positioned the entire Moorfields underground railway station complex in Liverpool relative to our surface topographical survey above (watch video). Other surveys have also been completed to facilitate new connections, chambers or other changes to a working system.

Complex Confined Spaces

We have also introduced 3D laser scanning methods to a number of more complex confined spaces and environments to enable design, client visualisations and maintenance planning programmes without unnecessary man-entry.

Confined Space and Culvert Surveys

Confined Space and Culvert Surveys play a crucial role in ensuring safety and operational efficiency in challenging environments. These surveys are essential for assessing the condition of confined spaces, such as culverts, tunnels, and underground utility chambers, which are difficult to access and can pose significant risks. The primary benefits include enhancing worker safety by identifying potential hazards before entry, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, and facilitating the maintenance and repair of infrastructure by providing detailed insights into the condition and integrity of the confined spaces.

Furthermore, these surveys support preventive maintenance strategies, reducing the likelihood of unexpected failures and costly emergency repairs. By employing advanced technologies such as remote sensing and robotic inspection tools, these surveys minimise human exposure to risk while delivering comprehensive data for informed decision-making, ultimately contributing to the longevity and reliability of critical infrastructure.

Culvert Survey FAQs

A Confined Space Survey involves assessing and mapping areas that are substantially enclosed, such as culverts, tunnels, sewers, and underground utility chambers. These spaces can pose significant risks due to limited access, poor ventilation, and potential hazardous conditions. The survey aims to evaluate the structural integrity, identify hazards, and gather precise data for maintenance, design, or compliance purposes.

These surveys are crucial for:

  • Ensuring Safety: Identifying potential hazards before personnel entry reduces the risk of accidents.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Meeting health and safety regulations, such as the UK’s Confined Spaces Regulations 1997, is mandatory for operations involving confined spaces.

Infrastructure Maintenance: Providing detailed insights into the condition of confined spaces aids in planning maintenance and repairs, preventing unexpected failures.

We employ advanced technologies to enhance safety and data accuracy, including:

  • 3D Laser Scanning: Captures detailed spatial data without requiring physical entry, allowing for design visualisations and maintenance planning.
  • Remote Sensing Equipment: Utilises sensors to assess environmental conditions within confined spaces.

Robotic Inspection Tools: Deploys remotely operated vehicles to navigate and inspect hazardous or inaccessible areas.
