Preserving History Through Innovation: Survey Operations at Caister Castle2025-05-14T11:05:25+01:00

Survey Operations have recently completed a comprehensive laser scan and photogrammetric survey of the historic Caister Castle, a remarkable 15th-century moated fortress nestled in the parish of West Caister, just over three miles north of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk.

Built between 1432 and 1446, Caister Castle is a site of significant historical and architectural interest. It was commissioned by Sir John Fastolf, a prominent English knight whose life and character — alongside that of Sir John Oldcastle — is believed to have inspired William Shakespeare’s legendary figure, Sir John Falstaff. The castle’s imposing 100-foot (33 metre) high tower still stands today as a testament to its medieval grandeur.

Despite its initial strength and strategic importance, Caister Castle endured turbulent times. In 1469, it was besieged and captured by the Duke of Norfolk during a violent dispute over inheritance, resulting in severe damage to the structure. Over the following centuries, the site gradually fell into disrepair, with the exception of the main tower, which remains largely intact.

laser scanning and photogrammetric survey

The recent laser scanning and photogrammetric survey by Survey Operations aims to digitally preserve the current condition of Caister Castle with millimetre-level accuracy. These advanced surveying techniques allow for the creation of detailed 3D models, which not only provide valuable data for conservation and restoration planning, but also open up exciting possibilities for virtual access and educational use.

By capturing and documenting Caister Castle in such fine detail, Survey Operations is contributing to the safeguarding of this heritage asset for future generations. The work ensures that this important piece of England’s medieval past can be studied, appreciated and understood both now and in years to come.

This project forms part of our ongoing commitment to applying cutting-edge technology in support of cultural heritage, combining technical expertise with a passion for preserving history.
